Analysis (2018)

This assignment paid specific attention on movement articulation starting from all different body parts with the help of a partner. Body articulation is Rudolf Laban's description of where your initiation of movement is. In 24-to-36-counts (30 seconds to 1 minute) my partner and I created a movement phrase and performed opposing/complementary body articulation concepts. Sophia Smith, my partner, and I focused on a unison phrase to begin. We wanted to have an enjoyable, popular song with somewhat easy movement to then focus on opposing initiation parts of the body for each movement. The music is The Middle by Zedd, we followed the lyrics as a large motivation of our choreographic choices.

These initiation points would either be the core, proximal limbs, a mid-limb, or distal body part. A gesture or movement would start with the core as its initiation point and Sophia and I would change it by changing the initiation point. It would mean Sophia would change the movement to be a distal initiation point and I would change this movement by making a proximal joint initiate the movement. A lot of movements developed through this process. This because a great choreographic device that carried on through my composition class as well.

After this duet was done, we created a simple motif labanotation score. As time progressed, it became easier to write a score since this movement was embodied. Our professor, Joda Lee, helped Sophia and I a lot as this was one of our first attempts to write labanotation. This duet pushed my choreographic skills and introduced me to writing labanotation.
