Trace (2018)

Trace is a thirteen minute piece within The Ohio State University Department of Dance 50th Anniversary show. This show honors each effort quality defined by Rudolf Laban; space, time, flow, and weight. Van-Pelt Petry focuses on the primary scale which is created to highlight a certain phrase within the icosahedron. This scale alternates from side to side, forward and backwards, while also recognizing diagonal space. I chose this dance due to my inside knowledge of the process and plan to explain space motifs. While gesturing through the primary scale, shapes or trace forms are created as a focus of the piece. Pathways from point of the primary scale to another creates a trace. The movement is by one, two, or three-dimensional pathways. These pathways are either linear, curved, or twisted. The first movement of the primary scale has the right elbow gesturing to the upper right diagonal in a one-dimensional, spoke-like movement. An imaginary trace is left behind when moving towards the second primary scale point in a two-dimensional, curved pathway with the right leg. As the sequence goes on, Petry emphasizes the importance making trace forms through the primary scale as focus in the piece. This is the inspiration of many sections and the concept develops throughout the piece. Tracings are found through the bodies in the primary scale motif as well as the projection shown on the floor to mimic this concept. Petry makes her concept clear by really digging into this part of Laban’s theory.
